What is a Hydrosol?

Hydrosols are subtle clear aromatic waters produced through the steam distillation of leaves, flowers, and fruits the same way essential oils (and spirits) are distilled. The primary difference between an essential oil and a hydrosol from the same plant is that the essential oil consists of extremely concentrated volatile oils whereas the hydrosol primarily consists of water soluble components and a small amount of volatile oils. This means that hydrosols are inherently more gentle and have a wide variety of applications. They are generally mild enough to be applied directly to skin and are a safe option for most pregnant women, babies, children, and kupuna.
